The Role of Fasting

Scripture: Matthew 6:16-18 (NIV)
“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Reflection:
Fasting is a spiritual discipline that deepens dependence on God, stripping away distractions to focus on Him. Jesus assumes His followers will fast, but He warns against doing it for show—instead, it’s a private act between us and the Father. Through fasting, we humble ourselves, seek clarity, and invite God’s power into our lives, as seen in biblical examples like Esther or the early church. It’s not about earning favor but drawing nearer to God, where true reward lies in His presence and guidance.

Application:
Consider incorporating a simple fast into your routine, like skipping a meal for prayer. What specific issue will you bring before God during this time?

Prayer:
Father, guide me in the practice of fasting. Help me to seek You sincerely, without seeking attention from others. Reward my efforts with deeper intimacy with You. Amen.
